The Herberger Institute, The Design School's programs provide an education that is both broad and deep. We offer the Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) degree with majors in Architectural Studies or in Housing and Community Development, the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) degrees, and the Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies. We also offer a minor in architectural studies, landscape architecture studies or design studies for students who wish to complement their major by exploring design.
Admission to the BSD professional programs is highly competitive. Students interested in pursuing the BSD in Architectural Studies, the BSD in Housing and Community Development, or the BSLA in Landscape Architecture, are admitted directly into the major, but they are required to pass a portfolio milestone at the end of their freshman year to be eligible to continue in the degree program.
With the exception of the architectural studies program, the BSD degrees prepare students to move into the professions as designers. The architecture program requires the master’s degree as preparation for professional practice.
Students interested in the BA in Design Studies are admitted directly into the major by indicating their degree preference on their admission application. No additional application is required to pursue this degree program.
