Collaborates: From Latin, com, with + laborare, to labor. To labor together.
Innovative contemporary design practices that work to resolve complex artifacts and environments require the interaction of a network of several disciplines to reach a shared goal. Rather than just a coordinated association of individuals with a clear stratified structure, collaboration pursues deliverables greater than the summation of all the parts. A collaborative process embraces the friction and tension of different ideas, allowing people “laboring together” in a beneficial interdisciplinary association to mutually reach a better outcome. This outcome can be driven only by the contribution of diverse and specialized knowledge and skills. Reflecting its new pedagogical structure, The Design School at ASU – composed of Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architect and Visual Communication – is organizing a series of events over the next three semesters to explore interdisciplinary collaboration in design. We are starting with the Spring 2013 Lecture Series, which will explore: When and how does collaborative practice happen? What are the requisites, settings, environments and technologies necessary to foster collaboration? How has interdisciplinary collaborative practice enriched the design process and products?
