Exploration of the Edge
Michael Underhill is a member of the American Institute of Architects and has a small practice with current projects in the Phoenix area. He was awarded an Arizona AIA Design Award (1998), a Houston AIA Design Award (1989), an Iowa AIA Honor Award (1994), and received a citation in the P/A Annual Awards program (19994). His work has been published in Architecture, Progressive Architecture, Iowa Architect, Texas Architect, and Designers West. Before starting his own firm, Underhill worked for Charles and Ray Eames, CRSS, and Taft Architects. He was a founding principal at Cisneros Underhill in Houston. Underhill has spoken widely on urban design and architecture, served on numerous design juries, and has carried out urban design projects in Houston, Nicaragua, and Chile (the latter two with Imre Halasz). Before coming to ASU to direct the School of Architecture, Underhill chaired the Department of Architecture at Iowa State, directed the School of Architecture at Rice University, and taught at MIT, Rice,
