HERBERGER CENTER FOR DESIGN RESEARCH

It is an exciting time for research activity at Arizona State University. To that end, the Herberger Center for Design Research (HCDR) is working to support and enhance research in the College of Design with collaborative events, new grants and programming, and ongoing design research initiatives.

The HCDR, in conjunction with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Administration and also the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) was instrumental in obtaining a major three year grant from the Department of Energy Solar America Initiative in a partnership with BP Solar. The HCDR and SALA will be leading research with BP to discover new ways to integrate their solar products into the design fabric of residential and commercial structures. view news release +

The center supported several events over the past year including the closing reception for the Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family/National Building Museum affordable housing exhibit at Bentley Projects and a special lecture by Dr. Hermann Scheer, member of the German Bundestag (Parliament) and author of Energy Autonomy. The center also hosted a distinguished academic jury for a weekend of deliberation to determine the awards for the 2007 EDRA/Places magazine Outstanding Projects research and design competition.

In addition, two visiting scholars from the UK are working with the center and the college and are contributing their expertise on solar, sustainability and related research topics. The Digital Phoenix research team continues to work closely with the Decision Theater toward producing models of urban growth and sustainability factors.

As always, the HCDR strives to support the individual research efforts of College of Design faculty in addition to searching for new campus-wide initiatives for further connection and larger collaborations. I invite you to review the many interesting and diverse research and applied design projects that are described throughout these pages. Please contact the center if you would like more information on any of the college’s research initiatives.
