HEALTHCARE DESIGN INITIATIVE

Introduction and Program Mission

The Healthcare Design Initiative is envisioned to integrate evidence-based design, sustainable science, and best practices benchmarks for planning healthcare facilities into a transdisciplinary advanced education program. The comprehensive initiative includes several different tracks to study healthcare design and healing environments at the graduate level, an annual student-produced magazine of research and trends, and a study abroad component. The proposed graduate degree programs include a Master of Healthcare Design (proposal to the Arizona Board of Regents under development), a Master of Science in Design with a concentration in Healthcare Design and Healing Environments (currently offered), and an online graduate program in Healthcare Design (under development)

Unlike any other program in the United States, the emphasis of ASU’s program will be on understanding the healing experience from the patient’s and user’s perspectives through facility-related components that cluster into eight functional work units: Programming (long-range planning), Facilities Analysis (physical and environmental), Space Management/Planning, Financial Analysis, Interior Planning and Design, Human Factors, Codes, and Strategic Planning. This multidisciplinary approach integrates the principles of architecture and interior architecture, nursing and healthcare innovation, leadership and management, human health services, communication studies, and behavioral sciences. Students will be mentored by local healthcare design consultants, team with nursing students and work directly with real clients, and correspond with forward-thinking healthcare research centers.

Upon graduation, students may pursue advanced positions in the following arenas:

  • Leadership and decision-making positions in the healthcare design industry
  • Strategic planners for large healthcare systems and corporations
  • Facility programmers for elite consulting firms
  • Innovative collaborators at research centers
  • Expert representatives for leading manufacturers and vendors
  • Medical planners for planning divisions in architectural and planning firms

Program Strengths

  • Interdisciplinary education through multiple supporting ASU partners including College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation, School of Leadership & Global Management, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication, and the College of Design and its academic units—Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, and Visual Communication Design
  • Patient/nurse-centered program, research, and interaction
  • Incorporate evidence-based research and sustainable science
  • Real clients and practitioners
  • Mentorship and outreach programs
  • Global perspective through study abroad programs
