Summer in the City? Discover Design!

Are You Ready to Learn About Design?

ASU’s College of Design invites you to discover the many facets of design through an interactive immersion program that focuses on the creative experience and processes of brand, identity, and products. The Design Immersion Workshop is for high school students who have an interest in the product and graphic design to understand what designers do, what creativity and innovation are all about, and, most importantly, how design decisions impact the environment and the people in them.

What is a Design Workshop?

The workshop is modeled on a college design studio where students learn the basics of design through several introductory projects. College of Design faculty will teach students about basic design principles, lead hands-on projects, conduct discussions with Valley design professionals, and direct tours of design firms and field trips to promote an understanding of the design experience and processes that shape it. The workshop faculty will be assisted by College of Design students, guest speakers, and professional designers.

The workshop will be taught by John Takamura, Assistant Professor of Industrial Design, and Tamara Christensen, PhD Candidate and Teaching Assistant in the college’s Environmental Design and Planning program.

What Will You Learn?

Over the course of the one-week program, students will explore different ways to approach innovative and creative problem solving, how products that we use in our every day lives are designed and marketed through strategic branding, and critically think about how design impacts our homes and the larger community. Students will also gain experience drawing and building prototype models.

The workshop will give students an opportunity to explore a new field of study—and quite possibly a new career option—in a college-based setting to help educate high school students about a university education. Students will also learn about design issues to make them a better informed citizens and decision makers.

The program culminates in an exhibition of student projects open to the public. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Why Should You Participate?

  • Career exploration in design professions
  • Interaction with ASU students and faculty
  • Gain experience in the design studio
  • Meet design professionals in the Valley
  • Continued assistance with ASU application process
