Available as a Printable PDF

For students that started studio sequence fall 2006 or earlier and have completed (or are currently enrolled in) DSC 101, IND 120, 121, 122, 227, 236, 242, 260, 316, 228, 243, 261, and 317

Admission to upper-division programs (third year) is competitive and limited by available resources.  Admission is awarded to those applicants demonstrating the highest promise for professional success.  Students applying to more than one degree program in the College of Design must submit a separate application and portfolio (if required) to each program.  Students not enrolled at ASU when they apply to upper-division programs must also submit an application for admission to the university.  Lower-division students not admitted to an upper-division program are not dismissed from the college and may reapply or transfer to other programs.  Students that are not admitted this fall to upper division that plan to reapply in spring 2009 are to contact the director or chairperson of the program they are reapplying to.  Transfers into upper-division programs are considered only one a space available basis, and such transfers are limited to students with equivalent course work who are competitive with continuing students.

Transfer Students and Transfer Work

  • Applications and portfolios will be accepted from students who have previously received approval for the transfer courses equivalent to the Industrial Design lower division required courses.
  • Transfer Transcripts (ASU transcripts are not requested): If your application includes courses that are being transferred to meet major course requirements, a transfer transcript must be included to verify enrollment from other institutions in those courses.
  • It will be expected that you request and ensure that an official transcript reflecting completion of those courses be received by the ASU Office of the Registrar by June 1, 2008.
  • Provide a copy of those transcripts (the copy may be unofficial) to the College of Design Academic Advising Center in the College of Design South building (CDS) room 115 by June 1, 2008.

  • Application to upper division (page 1 in portfolio)
  • Written Element (page 2 in portfolio)

Portfolio Requirements

Guidelines: The portfolio should be no larger than 9 X 12” with 8 ½ X 11 page format.  Notebooks are acceptable, expensive leather binders are not necessary.   Anything with zippers, handles and other accouterments are discouraged.

Applicant’s name must appear on the spine.  Do not include brass plates or other types of identification that can fall off easily or damage other portfolios.

Contents: The work submitted should represent what was learned in the lower division.  Students are allowed to re-do early work to bring it up to the level of later work.

There are no minimum samples required from each studio.  Five original hand drawn sketches and/or drawings, no larger than 8.5 X 11 are required. All other work should be photographed or reproduced through the various methods available.  Examples of work, their layout and written explanations should demonstrate the applicant’s understanding and application of:

  • Sketching/drawing
  • Color rendering
  • Drafting and technical drawing
  • 2-dimensional design
  • 3-dimensional design of both sketch models and finished models
  • Computer work
  • Writing skills
  • Creative problem-solving/innovation
NOTE:  The applicant’s portfolio is the primary means of showing conventional work; however, if the applicant has additional skills that can be best demonstrated through alternative media (e.g. CD, DVD), the portfolio can include such media as an addendum.  Skills that might be appropriate to demonstrate in this manner are interactive graphics and animation.  Applicants skilled in web page design might include web page addresses.  Include enough examples to show the depth of your accomplishments and skills.
Following is other work/information that may be included, but is not required:
  • Work done in other programs, particularly when the work was accepted for transfer credit in a required lower-division studio. Samples of professional work may also be included to show your skill level in a particular area.

Written Element Requirements

  • Written Element - A 300 to 500 word essay is required.  It should explain to the general public, “Why Industrial Design is Important to Society.”  It should be neatly typed and should be inserted in the Portfolio following the Application Documents.

Portfolio Return

Where:  College of Design North building, room 162.
When: Portfolios may be claimed in person on July 7, 2008 or later.  We will allow a third party to pick up your portfolio for you with written and signed permission.  While care will be taken in handling the portfolios, the College of Design will assume no liability for loss or damaged materials.

General Information

  • If you have re-taken a class, you should check with the Registrar’s Office to ensure the lower grade has been deleted.
  • Students applying to more than one program must submit separate application materials (including a separate portfolio) as required by that major.
  • If you change your mailing address between the time you submit your application to upper division and the admission decision notice date, please contact the Department(s) where you applied to update the address on your program application.  You must make any official address changes on the ASU interactive website.  For assistance contact the Office of the Registrar.

Admission Decision

  • Students will be notified of the admissions decision on or before: July 1, 2008.

Matriculation

  • Students that are accepted are expected to begin the upper-division professional program at the beginning of the immediate next fall term.  If you have any questions regarding this policy please contact the department chairperson of the Industrial Design program.
