Applying to pass the degree milestone requirement (second year) is competitive and limited by available resources.  Selection is awarded to those applicants demonstrating the highest promise for professional success.  Students applying to more than one program must submit a separate application and portfolio (if required) to each program. Students not enrolled at ASU when they apply to pass the degree milestone must also submit an application for admission to the university.  Students that do not pass the degree milestone are not dismissed from the college and may reapply the following year or transfer to other programs.  Students who plan to reapply should contact a college academic advisor.  Transfers into programs are considered only if vacancies occur, and such transfers are limited to students with equivalent course work who are competitive with continuing students.

Qualifications

• For students that started studio sequence fall 2007 and have completed (or are currently enrolled in) INT 111, 121, 120, 131, 123, 221, and 222 with a “C” or better.
• Selection to pass the degree milestone in Interior Design is limited to applicants who have completed the first year requirements and who are determined by the admissions committee to have the best potential for academic success. Space in the program is limited.
• Application materials and GPA’s will be assessed to determine academic success. Decisions will be made based on the following and weighted with the following percentages: 30% Portfolio, 20% ASU GPA, 25% Interior Design GPA, and 25% Written Statement.
• A grade of “C” or higher is required in all first year required courses to be eligible for admission to the upper division Interior Design Program.  This includes all general studies required courses.

 Transfer Students and Transfer Work

• Transfer students applying directly to pass the degree milestone submit an Application Form and a Certificate of Admission to ASU to the Academic Advising Office, CDS 115, by no later than March 15, 2007 for evaluation of transfer work.  Course syllabi must be included.
• Applications and portfolios will be accepted from students who have previously received approval for the transfer courses equivalent to the Interior Design first year required courses.
• Transfer Transcripts (ASU transcripts are not required). If your application includes courses that are being transferred to meet major course requirements, a transfer transcript must be included to verify enrollment in those courses.
• It will be expected that you request and ensure that an official transcript reflecting completion of those courses be received by the ASU Office of the Registrar by June 1, 2008.
• Provide an unofficial copy of those transcripts to the College of Design Academic Advising Center in the College of Design South building (CDS) room 115 by June 1, 2008.

Deficiencies

• All deficiencies must be completed before fall 2009 or the student will be removed from the program.
• The faculty of the Department of Interior Design may admit any student deficient in a published school criterion. Should the faculty choose to admit such an applicant, the student is automatically placed on provisional admission status.

Application Materials

• Application to pass Degree Milestone Requirement form should be placed in the front pocket of the “File ‘N View” binder.
• Written statement
• Signed academic integrity document stating that the portfolio contains your own work and was produced by your own hand.

Portfolio Requirements

• Portfolio must be presented in a “File ‘N View” binder (black, letter size with 24 pockets).
• “File ‘N View” binders may be purchased from Donna Geary’s office in CDN 162, for $6.30. (Check or exact change only please.)  Binders will be available for purchase after February 4, 2008.
• The title Interior Design should appear on the spine of the “File ‘N View” binder.
• There should be no indication of the applicant’s name anywhere on the “File ‘N View” binder or on any of the contents except the application documents.  Application documents will be removed for purposes of anonymity.
• The professional portfolio is the communication instrument used in the industry to determine the best candidates to hire for jobs and/or projects.  The portfolio is constructed to tell a story of your abilities which will be reviewed without the luxury of personal interface with the reviewers (unlike what you have experienced in class).
• The portfolio represents the application of design principles and elements through the composition of its layout. The portfolio has a focused message to deliver.
• Original work from required classes is preferred.
• Pixilated images are not considered acceptable work.  Submit clear, crisp photos or copies of work.

• Hand drawing and rendering
1. Quick sketching / visualization / conceptualization (i.e. INT 120, 111)
2. Rendering technique (i.e. INT 120)
   
• Modeling (i.e. INT 121,123 – computer or 3-D handcrafted models)
  
• Principles of composition and order (i.e. INT 221)
  
• Instrument assisted drawing

• Computer applications (i.e. INT 121,123)
  

• Influences:  Cultural, Historical, Environmental, and Social (i.e.  INT 111, 131)
  
• Miscellaneous (optional) (i.e. INT222)
  
• Other design work such as painting/artwork, ceramics, professional work, personal journals, sketchbooks, etc.

Portfolio Suggestions:

• Include enough examples from each course to show the depth of your accomplishments and skills.
  
• Where possible include original work. Three-dimensional work should be photographed and color prints submitted.  Note that care must be taken with lighting.  Most novices end up photographing their work twice to get quality prints. 
  
• You should include a brief caption explaining each project presented.
  
• Following is other work/information that may be included, but is not required:
• Work done in other programs, particularly when the work was accepted for transfer credit in a required lower-division studio.
• Samples of professional work may also be included to show your skill level in a particular area.

Written Statement Requirements

• The written statement should be placed in the 1st pocket of the Binder.  Do not include your name.  Develop a one-page written statement of no more than 500 words, 10 or 12 point font, double spaced, 1” margins—top, bottom, and sides.  If required, a second page may be used to incorporate graphic illustrations. For the topic of this written statement, select ONE of the following scenarios of your choice:
  

1. Select a project from your portfolio and relate how you generated ideas, as well as how you developed your concept for the project.  Incorporate an analysis of how you used design principles and elements in your project.

2. Based on your understanding from the classes you have taken in the Interior Design program, what values and contributions does the field of interior design offer society?

3. Identify three interior designers or architects and discuss their approach to design.  Explain how these individuals have influenced your approach to design.

Portfolio Return

• Where:  CDN 162
• When: Portfolios may be claimed in person on July 7, 2008.  We will allow a third party to pick up your portfolio for you with written and signed permission.  While care will be taken in handling the portfolios, the College of Design will assume no liability for loss or damaged materials.

General Information

• If you have re-taken a class to improve your GPA, you should check with the Registrar’s Office to ensure the lower grade has been deleted.
  
• Students applying to more than one program must submit separate application materials (including separate portfolio) as required by that major.
  
• If you change your mailing or e-mail address between the time you submit your application to pass the milestone and the admission decision notice date, please contact the Department of Interior Design to update the address on your program application.  This will not change your address with the university.  A current address must be on file with the University Registrar’s Office.  Address updates may be completed on-line at the ASU interactive site.
  

Admission Decision

• Students will be notified by: July 1, 2008
  

Matriculation
