Each student enters the college for the first- and second-year lower-division bachelor of science preprofessional period with a focus on one of the college’s particular design programs. Admission to the third- and fourth-year upper-division professional program in Interior Design is competitive and begins after completion of lower-division requirements. The third- and fourth-year program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) degree with a concentration in Interior Design.
Interior design courses offer opportunities to explore creative expression as well as to develop critical thinking skills. The four-year curriculum emphasizes design process, problem solving, technical skill development, and management. Computer technology is integrated into each level of the curriculum. The program offers an excellent environment for experimenting with sophisticated software for presentation and simulation. Studio work examines human interaction with the built environment along with sustainable design issues allowing preservation of the natural environment for future generations. Assignments offer conceptual and practical problem-solving challenges. Between the third and fourth year, students perform summer internships with well-known design companies in the United States. This offers students the opportunity to work with leaders in the interior design profession.
The Interior Design program is accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design and Education Research (FIDER) and provides the educational credentials and knowledge needed for graduates to take required exams for a professional design organization or for licensure/registration exams required in several states.
