DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR DESIGN

CHAIR'S WELCOME

The Department of Interior Design provides a provocative and stimulating learning environment for the discovery of how people use space. Nestled in the multidisciplinary College of Design, students have the rare opportunity to glean both knowledge and experience working with the same disciplines as they will work with in professional practice. This living laboratory of design invites the community to participate in student projects with the value of gaining new problem solving methods. The participation of the community keeps design decision making agile and inclusive of multiple perspectives in problem solving.

Design decisions are not created in a vacuum, but through collaboration and communication.  Each course in the curriculum will progressively hone your ability to communicate the ideas you have in your mind whether through sketching, computer technology, critical thinking, or the studio experience. Your instructors are recognized leaders in their areas of expertise.  They are passionate about what they teach.  Therefore, they use their research to inform their teaching and their teaching to inform their research. This leads to both a depth and breadth of knowledge in the essential areas needed for the practice of design in the global market.

One of the program’s alumni commented recently—"I always wondered why they called it professional interior design practice.  I finally see the point. I just keep practicing and practicing but the variables keep changeing so the solution comes out differently." We will give you a firm foundation and provide you with a leading-edge context for "practicing" interior design. Design needs the type of leaders that ASU's Department of Interior Design produces to make future decisions about environments that human beings inhabit for work and play as well as concerns for sustainability, integrity, and responsiveness to the market.
