LASER CUTTING & ENGRAVING
We currently have two Universal Laser Systems solid state laser cutters available for student use. These machines are extremely useful for etching patterns and cutting virtually any 2-dimensional shape from a wide variety of thin materials such as chipboard, wood and some plastics. They are smaller versions of large industrial production systems, and are used by students and research faculty for architectural models and product prototyping.
Cutting / Etching Examples

Laser Cutting Sign Up Rules:

You may sign up for laser cutter time a maximum of 48-hours in advance.

You may only sign up for 90 minutes in any one day. (If there are unused time slots this rule may be waived)

You must sign up for laser cutter time in-person at the Arch 330 print desk. Photo ID is required.

Laser Cutter time must be paid for in advance using your SunCard account only.

If you are letting another student use all or a portion of your time, you must notify the Lab Assistant on duty.

Laser Cutter Operation Rules:

If you have never used the Laser Cutter you must indicate this fact on your initial sign-up sheet so we may schedule time for a technician to assist you.

While you are operating the Laser Cutter, you MUST watch the machine at all times, due to the fact that your material may catch on fire.

If your material does catch on fire, you MUST immediatly notify a Lab Assistant.

After your part is finished cutting, it is necessary to keep the lid of the Laser cutter closed for one minute to allow smoke or vapors to be vented away.

The following materials may NOT be cut using the Laser Cutter:

  • Acrylic
  • Plexiglas
  • Foam
  • Foamcore Board
  • Any Painted Materials
  • Masonite

Once you have completed your cutting session you must check out with one of the lab assistants.
