John H. Takamura, MSD 2005
Assistant Professor of Industrial Design,
Arizona State University

Why did I select the MSD Program?
I chose the MSD program at ASU because of its reputation as a collaborative educational environment with industry as well as for the high caliber of its design faculty. I was very impressed with the emphasis on design research in the program of study and was very attracted to the many courses provided.

What was the most significant learning experience in the MSD Program?
The MSD degree made it possible for me to embark on a full-time teaching career in a research university. Having been a practicing industrial designer for several years I decided to embark on a new career path in design education and I clearly couldn’t have achieved it without my MSD degree.

How did earning the MSD assist me in my present position?
The one key experience I had while in the MSD program was the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for undergraduate industrial design courses. These opportunities were absolutely vital in accumulating teaching experience for my career in design education. Backed up by Teaching Practicum, a graduate course in teaching, and other similar courses I had many opportunities to discuss teaching issues with trusted faculty as well as with other students.
