Design Concentration
In the context of the PhD Program and ASU, design as a concentration is about issues affecting the broader challenges in the design professions of architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design and visual communication design. Faculty members involved in the PhD program are at the center of many of these challenges. Sustainability is one such design challenge and several faculty members are doing leading-edge research in the area.
Such is the case with Harvey Bryan and Agami Reddy, professors who are leading research initiatives in energy and buildings, building simulation, and environmental impacts of buildings. Similarly, Edward Cook, associate professor, is a leading expert in urban open space planning, ecological networks and greenways, riparian corridor planning and ecological design.
Equally noteworthy is the research in the development of ecologically intelligent products and systems undertaken by Philip White, assistant professor. In a similar vein, there is outstanding research being undertaken in knowledge-based systems for code compliance, computer simulation, data modeling, and environmental cognition by Filiz Ozel, professor, and in sustainability, building energy performance, daylighting analysis and performance by Michael Kroelinger, executive dean and professor.
Design innovation is another design challenge, one that is the focus of InnovationSpace and Prasad Boradkar, associate professor. Diane Bender, associate professor, is also involved in design and computer technology especially as it impacts online education.
Design and context is yet another area of interest in the Design Concentration, one in which Jacques Giard, professor, is active.
