Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a paper at the annual Environmental Design Research Association conference in Sacramento, California titled “Preschool Playground Design: Are Safety Regulations Impediments to Sustainable Communities?” This paper investigates some of the unintended negative consequences of well-meaning safety regulations that govern the design of preschool playgrounds located on public school property (May, 2007).
Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a paper at the annual Environmental Design Research Association conference in Sacramento, California titled “Desert Botanical Kindergarten”. This paper is a case study of a sustainable school yard desert garden (May, 2007).
Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a paper in collaboration with Dr. Pradnya Patet at the annual Environmental Design Research Association conference in Atlanta, Georgia titled “Cultural Influences on Young Children’s Social and Spatial Negotiation Strategies”. This paper investigates the influence of children’s cultural backgrounds on their negotiation styles and abilities during conflict episodes involving space and materials (May, 2006).
Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a paper at the annual Environmental Design Research Association conference in Atlanta, Georgia titled “Conflict in Context: Episodes in Indoor and Outdoor Environments of Preschools”. This paper explores the qualitative and quantitative nature of children’s conflicts and its resolution in relation to the physical dimensions of the conflict setting. It is an in-depth investigation of context specific conflict episodes occurring both in indoor and outdoor settings of preschools (May, 2006).
Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a paper at the annual American Educational Research Association conference in San Francisco, California titled “Issues and Challenges in Evaluating Early Childhood Professional Development Programs: Lessons Learned”. This paper discusses some of the challenges and issues that dictated the design and implementation of a summative evaluation plan for the Arizona System Ready Child Ready Professional Development Project. This was a federally funded early childhood education professional development project targeting high poverty communities (April, 2006).
Debarati Majumdar-Narayan co-authored a paper for the annual conference for National Association for the Education of Young Children titled “’My Space!’‘Your Space!’‘Our Space!’’Now we can Play!’”. This paper discussed how young children negotiate space and materials as they play within the confines of physical barriers and boundaries set by adults (December, 2005).

Debarati Majumdar-Narayan presented a workshop for early childhood researchers and educators at the Annual Early Childhood Fair in Holbrook, Arizona titled “Playground Design: A Cultural Dialogue”. This workshop focused on the importance of understanding children’s perceptions of outdoor play and their ideas of an ideal playground in elementary or preschool settings (April, 2005).

Sohyun Park was invited for the expert seminar held at the Kangwon University in Korea. She gave a lecture with regard to the theory and application of landscape ecological planning, which is supported by the Forest Science Research Institute (May 2007).
Sohyun Park presented a paper, "Accessing nature as ecological public spaces" at the International Symposium on Universal Design and Visitability: from accessibility to zoning in the Ohio State University (July 2006).
Sohyun Park co-authored a book titled "Landscape assessment and management in rural areas: visual aesthetics and economic value" published by Korea Environment Institute (December 2005).
Sohyun Park co-authored two journal papers one of which is "Guidelines for the Establishment and Vitalization Scheme on Facility of Nature Environmental Conservation and its Utilization" accepted by Korean Society for Environmental Restoration and Revegetation Technology (2006) and the other, "Recognition and Improvement of Rural Landscape Management System" accepted by Korean Society of Rural Planning (2007).

Akram presented a paper that he co-authored with Professors Harvey Bryan and Dan Hoffman at the annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society in San Diego titled: "Using ENVI-met Simulation as a Tool to Optimize Downtown Phoenix's Urban Form for Pedestrian Comfort" (May 2008).
Akram will be preseting another co-authored paper with Professors Harvey Bryan and Dan Hoffma at the SIMBUILD2008 - International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) at the University of California, Berkeley. The paper is titled:"Visualizing Pedestrian Comfort in a Hot Arid Urban Environment Using ENVI-met" (July-August 2008).

Ahrentzen).
Aparna and Dr. Ozel have collaborated on research that is sponsored through the ASU Stardust Center that is centered around the Sunnyslope neighborhood community in the Phoenix Metro area and focuses on the development of a GIS model for the spatial distribution, interaction, and spatial overlap of this community’s assets. The model is intended to play a role in the evaluation of the community’s assets in a multi-stakeholder environment.
