The School of Planning is comprised of two degree programs—the Master of Urban and Environmental Planning and the Bachelor of Science in Planning. Urban and environmental sustainability are emphasized—a focus that mirrors the strategic goals of ASU as it evolves into a New American University. A planner’s role as change agents distinguishes these two professional, accredited planning degrees from other academic units at ASU involved in urban issues. Located within the College of Design, planning students have the opportunity to collaborate with students in architecture, design studies, housing and urban development, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, real estate development, and visual communication design.
The School of Planning utilizes its advantage of location in the Phoenix metropolitan area and the Southwestern region and concentrates on planning and design appropriate to rapidly expanding urban areas, particularly within arid environments. The School of Planning lays claim to the future-oriented and comprehensive nature of training for developing planning professionals. Students learn to link knowledge about cities and their regions to actions that improve the quality of public and private development decisions affecting both people and places. Courses and studio work seek to instill an ability to embrace visionary thinking with implementation of plans to reconcile present realities and future possibilities and to ground students in current theories, practices, methods, and skills of the planning professions.
Our graduates become professionals who can meet the opportunities and challenges presented by the rapid urban and regional growth in Arizona and the Southwest. Our students have the opportunity to learn from planning professionals and faculty who are immersed in research programs and policy making at all levels of urban, metropolitan, and regional planning. We have a motivated faculty, an active planning student organization, and many opportunities for students to gain professional experience in local planning offices. Employment opportunities for graduates of our program in the public and private sector offices are excellent.
School of Planning faculty are increasingly involved in research and teaching abroad and developing specialties in four major areas—Community and Urban Development, Environmental Planning, International Planning, and Transportation.
