Capitol Mall Centennial Plan

On November 15, a team of ASU College of Design architects and urban planners presented the Capitol Mall Centennial Plan to the Legislative Governmental Mall Commission. The result of lengthy study—including intensive site analysis and interviews with lawmakers and staff—the plan makes key infrastructural and landscape recommendations directed toward the goal of revitalizing the Capitol Mall District as Arizona prepares to celebrate its centennial in 2012. As a result of this work, the Governmental Mall Commission has formed a subcommittee, headed by Senator Jake Flake, to review the proposals put forth in the master plan and develop ways for the plan to go forward.

The Centennial Plan has been developed by a team of ASU College of Design architects and planners, led by Darren Petrucci, Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The team is working under the auspices of the Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory. Project partners include the Phoenix Community Alliance and the Arizona Department of Administration. Information and assistance have been provided by the Arizona Department of Transportation, the City of Phoenix, Maricopa County, and the Capitol Mall Association.
