Archives of the Joint Urban Design Program

1990–2006

The Joint Urban Design Program, the community outreach arm of the College of Design from 1988 through 2006, organized a series of community design charrettes that grappled with the challenges of urbanization in cities and towns throughout Arizona. We offer here a selection from the archives of its work.

Tombstone Civic Town Plan (2005)
A JUDP project in partnership with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Due to inappropriate development, the town of Tombstone, Arizona, faces loss of its National Historic Landmark stature. The charrette focused on the development of design guidelines and sustainable economic development. The charrette was held September 1–4, 2005.

River Corridor Design Workshop (2005)
A half-day workshop with Friends of the West Valley Recreation Corridor and the Arizona Foundation for Resource Education resulted in this plan for future projects along the Agua Fria River corridor.

Jerome Civic Town Plan (2004)
A JUDP project in partnership with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The small town of Jerome, Arizona, faces issues of unmanaged growth. JUDP and SHPO coordinated a charrette that resulted in a Civic Town Plan that defines historic preservation as a strategy of community and economic development. The charrette was held May 6–9, 2004.

The Broadway Corridor Community Charrette (2002)
The Broadway Corridor Charrette examined neighborhoods in transition located to the south of Broadway Road in Mesa, Arizona. The area of study was from Broadway Road to 8th Avenue and from Country Club Drive to Stapley Road. The charrette was held November 21–24, 2002.

Wilson Charrette (2000)
Fourth in the Reinventing Neighborhoods series, the Wilson Community Design Charrette examined the central Phoenix neighborhood located between 16th Street and 32nd Street, Roosevelt Street south to include Sky Harbor Airport and was held November 16–19, 2000.

Balsz/Gateway Charrette (1999)
Third in the Reinventing Neighborhoods series, this charrette examined the area south of McDowell Road to Buckeye Road and East of 32nd Street to 52nd Street.
Charrette dates were November 18–21, 1999.

Central City South (1999)
Second in the Reinventing Neighborhoods series, this charrette examined the area south of the railroad near to I-17 and west of Central Avenue to the freeway.

Roosevelt Neighborhood (1998)
First in the Reinventing Neighborhoods series, this charrette examined the area south of McDowell Road to Van Buren Street from 7th Street to 7th Avenue.

Gather the Tools (1998)
Research on homelessness and human services in the Capitol Mall area of Phoenix led to this report, published by the Herberger Center. The research was a result of questions raised at the Capitol Mall Charrette of 1996 (see below).

Capitol Mall Charrette (1996, published 1997)
Sponsored by the Arizona AIA, the City of Phoenix, and the Phoenix Community Alliance, the three-day charrette was hosted by the Joint Urban Design Program. Participants joined in an intensive workshop to create a new vision for Arizona's Capitol Mall in Phoenix. Proceedings were published by the Herberger Center.

Community Housing Design (1996)
Funded by the Arizona Department of Commerce, this report aids in the development of affordable housing by including precepts of community planning in the design of housing and neighborhoods.
