It is an exciting time to be part of ASU’s New American University. Emerging research interests have created opportunities for entrepreneurial programs including InnovationSpace, a joint venture among the College of Design’s Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design departments, the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, and the W.P. Carey School of Business. In the InnovationSpace program, teams of students work on real-world projects developing new product concepts that improve daily life and the world that we live in.
The metropolitan Phoenix region, where ASU is located, is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States and an exciting laboratory for the study of design in all its facets. ASU is poised to be the premier research institution in the United States in the fields of sustainability and the built environment. As design impacts all aspects of land use, development, transportation, infrastructure, construction, community building, and human interaction at all scales, this presents an enormous opportunity for the college to be a force for change in the Phoenix metropolitan region and beyond. ASU entities such as the Global Institute of Sustainability, the Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family, the Decision Theater, and the college’s own Phoenix Urban Research Lab (PURL) present significant opportunities for the linkage of science and design. With these research collaborators, students have broad and varied opportunities to stretch their abilities and learning experience within the built and natural environments. The College of Design’s research and programs extend internationally with faculty involved in South America, the Mexican border regions, and Europe. The college is building bridges to other disciplines to advance the potential for research and practice that have yet to be fully realized at any of our peer institutions.
