Learn About Design This Summer!
The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) presents this hands-on, project-based, summer studio for grades 5 through 9. Led by practicing professionals with the assistance of current SALA graduate students, 9to5 Design will explore drawing and sketching, model building, computer-aided drawing, and design thinking in five, two-week sessions.
Dates and Times
Session 1 "Collaging and Montaging": June 1–12, 2009 (canceled)
Combining photography and architecture, this highly visual course will teach students to create an architectural design using collaging techniques, in addition to showing it located on a real “site”. Students will work with their hands to cut and paste images of materials and forms, followed by the creation of a series of proposals which will then be photomontaged. Session 2 "Making with Modules": June 15–26, 2009 (canceled)
Making with modules explores ways of using repeated elements to form an architectural whole. Students will produce units and arrange them to create innovative architectural forms. Students will also develop designs through hand drawing and test them using three dimensional models.
Session 3 "Stop Frame Stories": June 29–July 10, 2009 (canceled)
Students will design and make a building from a kit of parts, and then produce a stop
motion animation of its construction. The first week will consist of hands on model
making of a design proposal. In the second week students will photograph their
projects and make an animation in iMovie of its construction sequence.
Session 4 "Patterns and Pattern Cutting": July 13–24, 2009 (seats still available)
This course explores the use of patterns in design. Like dress maker's patterns cut from a flat sheet, students will create three dimensional forms and decorative surfaces. During these two weeks they will develop drawing and model making skills, in addition to becoming familiar with the laser cutter as a tool for making models.
Session 5 "Architecture and Things": July 27–August 7, 2009 (seats still available)
An intensive drawing and model making course. Students begin the first week by
drawing an object in detail: looking at form, texture, light and shadow, construction
and finish. The drawings are then used as the basis for an architectural design which
is developed through hand made models.
