Please pay careful attention to filing requirements for graduate programs in the College of Design’s schools, departments, and programs. You must submit your online application and fee, test scores(GRE or TOFEL), and official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions directly to the Graduate College. Other specifically designated materials are submitted directly to the school, department, or program that administers the degree. Failure to file the appropriate documentation in the appropriate place can cause a delay, or worse, a decline in your application for graduate school. Please consult an advisor in the College of Design if you have any questions about the application process.
- Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university recognized by ASU.
- Applicants must have completed a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Architectural Studies or similar preprofessional degree in architecture. The undergraduate degree must be granted by an institution that offers the National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB) accredited degree program in architecture.
- Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirements as established by the Graduate College.
- Official copy of GRE scores (unofficial copies will not be accepted). For more information on the GRE: (www.gre.org, or if you live near ASU, www.asu.edu/uts). The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture does not have a minimum score for admissions; however, the average scores of admitted students are between 500-600 for each section.
- In addition to the above requirements, international students are required to submit an official TOEFL score (www.TOEFL.org). The minimum score for admission to the program is 100 (Internet), 250 (computer-based), or 600 (paper-based). Other information for International applicants can be found on the Graduate College website www.asu.edu/graduate/international/index.htm.
- Admission to the Master of Architecture program is selective, and the Master of Architecture program does not defer admission. Students must enroll in the semester for which they are admitted otherwise they will need to go through the entire application process again for the year in which they are applying.
- Applicants may be admitted to the two-year program with deficiencies if their previous course work is not equivalent to the ASU undergraduate requirements and standards. Deficiencies must be completed prior to taking the required course(s) if necessary. Please keep in mind that this may cause the student to take longer than two years to complete the program.
- A personal interview is not required; however, a candidate wishing to visit the school is welcome and should make arrangements by contacting
SALA@asu.edu

Applicants must file separate application materials with both the Graduate College and with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Materials must be sent separately to both locations. Materials not sent directly to the individual locations could experience a delay and may result in the applicant’s denial. Admissions requirements and online application can be found at the Graduate College website.
Once the Graduate College Admissions office receives the application, students are notified of their asurite id and activation code through an acknowledgement, sent by the Graduate College admissions office within 48 hours of receipt of the application. If you have submitted an application and have not received this code, please contact the Graduate College office at gradadmiss@asu.edu or call 480.965.6113.
Applicants are then able to interactively track the status of their application materials submitted to the Graduate College Admissions office on the web. The information on this website identifies missing documents (transcripts, application fee, etc) and provides the student with up-to-date information on the routing of the application. The status-checking website is available through a secure login using the applicant’s asurite id and password, and is www.asu.edu/interactive.
Applicants should write their name in a clear and consistent manner on all materials submitted, preferably in the “family name, first name” format (e.g., Smith, John).
- Statement of Intent. A personal narrative (maximum 600 words or two pages typed) indicating the applicant’s interest, previous academic and practical background, as well as personal and professional educational objectives.
- Letters of Recommendation. A minimum of three letters of recommendation in support of the applicant must be mailed directly to the Graduate Admissions Committee, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The references should be from professionals or educators familiar with the applicant’s experience and capability for graduate work.
- Portfolio. Candidates applying for the two-year Master of Architecture program are required to submit a portfolio. See the portfolio requirements for more information.
