Please pay careful attention to the application requirements for graduate programs in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The Herberger Institute School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture requires you to submit your online application and fee, test scores (GRE or TOFEL), official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions, the names and contact information of three references, and the statement of intent directly to the Graduate College. The portfolio/creative works are the only materials that are submitted directly to the program that admininisters the degree. Failure to file the appropriate documentation in the appropriate place can cause a delay, or worse, a decline in your application for graduate school. Master of Architecture (MArch) Two-year Program
Admission Requirements

The School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture does not have a minimum score for admissions; however, the average scores of admitted students are between 500–600 for each section.
- In addition to the above requirements, international students are required to submit an official TOEFL score (www.TOEFL.org). The minimum score for admission to the program is 100 (Internet), 250 (computer-based), or 600 (paper-based). - Admission to the Master of Architecture program is selective, and the Master of Architecture program does not defer admission. Students must enroll in the semester for which they are admitted otherwise they will need to go through the entire application process again for the year in which they are applying.
- Applicants may be admitted to the two-year program with deficiencies if their previous course work is not equivalent to the ASU undergraduate requirements and standards. Deficiencies must be completed prior to taking the required course(s) if necessary. Please keep in mind that this may cause the student to take longer than two years to complete the program.

Master of Science in the Built Environment
Admission Requirements
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university recognized by ASU, in one of the professions or fields of study outlined below:
- Individuals who hold a previous five- or six-year NAAB (National Architectural Board) accredited professional degree in Architecture (BArch or MArch degree). See the
NAAB website for more information.
- Individuals who are licensed landscape architects or those who have completed a four-year Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture degree, or a Master in Landscape Architecture degree. The undergraduate or graduate degree must be granted by an institution that offers the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) accredited degree program in architecture.
- Individuals who have an Engineering degree (BS or MS) with a background in building sustainability issues. (Mechanical & Civil Engineering, and Construction majors are particularly suited for application to this program)
- Individuals who have a Science degree (BS or MS degree) with a background in building sustainability issues.
- Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirements as established by the Graduate College.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must begin the Master of Architecture/Master of Business Administration (dual degree/concurrent program) in the School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture and finish in the W.P. Carey School of Business. Students are required to complete the degree requirements for the MArch prior to beginning study in the MBA program. In addition, admission to the MArch program does not guarantee admission to the MBA program. Applicants must follow the admission requirements for each program. See W.P. Applicants who hold a professional design degree (BSLA, MLA, BArch, MArch) will be considered for the two-year MUD program. Applicants who have extensive professional work experience in an urban design related area but who do not have a professional degree in design may be considered for admission to a three- year MUD program that includes an initial year of design studies. The MUD is a postprofessional, nonaccredited program.

Application Procedures
Please submit the following items directly to the the Graduate College :
- Online Application and Fee
- Test Scores (GRE and TOFEL-for international applicants)
- Official Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
- Three References: The names and contact information of a minimum of three individuals to serve as references in support of the applicant must be included in the online application. The references should be from professionals or educators familiar with the applicant's experience and capability for graduate work.
- The Statement of Intent: A personal narrative (maximum 600 words or two pages typed) indicating the applicant's interest, previous academic and practical background, as well as personal and professional educational objectives.

Once the Graduate College Admissions office receives the application, students are notified of their asurite id and activation code through an acknowledgement, sent by the Graduate College admissions office within 48 hours of receipt of the application. If you have submitted an application and have not received this code, please contact the Graduate College office at gradadmiss@asu.edu or call 480.965.6113.
Applicants are then able to interactively track the status of their application materials submitted to the Graduate College Admissions office on the web. The information on this website identifies missing documents (transcripts, application fee, etc) and provides the student with up-to-date information on the routing of the application. The status-checking website is available through a secure login using the applicant’s asurite id and password and is my.asu.edu.
Additional Master of Urban Design (MUD) Two-Year Program Requirements
Portfolio: Candidates applying for the two-year Master of Urban Design program are required to submit a portfolio. See the portfolio requirements for more information.
- The portfolio is the only application item that should be sent directly to the School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture (see address below). Do not send the portfolio to the Graduate College. Applicants should write their name in a clear and consistent manner on all materials submitted, preferably in the “family name, first name” format (e.g., Smith, John). Additionally, the AUS ID number, and the exact program to which the applicant is applying should be clearly marked on the portfolio.
The School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture does not return portfolios.
Materials that are not sent directly to the appropriate locations could experience a delay and may result in the applicant’s denial.

Application Deadlines
All materials must be received by the School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture and the Graduate College by January 15 for fall semester consideration. Late application materials will not be considered. The Master of Urban Design (two-year) program does not admit students for the spring semester or summer semester.
Applications for assistantship and scholarships are generally considered at the same time as the application. You will be able to submit your application for a Teaching Assistantship online after January 1st.
Master of Urban Design (MUD) Three-plus Program
Admission Requirements
- Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university recognized by ASU.
- Applicants who do not have a professional degree in design(BSLA, MLA, BArch, MArch) must have extensive professional work experience in an urban design related area to be considered for admission to a three-year MUD program that includes an initial year of design studies.
- Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirements as established by the Graduate College.
- Official copy of GRE scores (unofficial copies will not be accepted). For more information on the GRE (www.gre.org, or if you live near ASU, www.asu.edu/uts). The School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture does not have a minimum score for admissions; however, the average scores of admitted students are between 500–600 for each section.
- In addition to the above requirements, international students are required to submit an official TOEFL score (www.TOEFL.org). The minimum score for admission to the program is 100 (Internet), 250 (computer-based), or 600 (paper-based). Other information for International applicants can be found on the Graduate College website www.asu.edu/graduate/international/index.htm.
- A personal interview is not required; however, a candidate wishing to visit the school is welcome and should make arrangements by contacting SALA.grad@asu.edu or 480.965.1033.

The names and contact information of a minimum of three individuals to serve as references in support of the applicant must be included in the online application. The references should be from professionals or educators familiar with the applicant's experience and capability for graduate work. Do not send letters of reference to the department.

Creative Works Portfolio: Candidates applying for the Three- plus Master of Urban Design program are required to submit a creative works portfolio. portfolio. See the creative portfolio requirements for more information. See the Creative Works Portfolio Tips section for ideas about how to develop the creative works portfolio.
- The Creative Works Portfolio is the only application item that should be sent directly to the School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture (see address below). Do not send the Creative Works Portfolio to the Graduate College. Additionally, the AUS ID number, and the exact program to which the applicant is applying should be clearly marked on the creative works portfolio.
The School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture does not return creative works portfolios.
