MASTER OF URBAN DESIGN

Admissions

The Master of Urban Design (MUD) is a multidisciplinary program in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The curriculum draws from the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, law, civil engineering, planning, public programs, real estate development, and the first School of Sustainability in the United States. The program leverages its local conditions (rapidly urbanizing metropolis, arid climate, New American University) toward the development of responsible global initiatives and innovative design strategies for urban environments. The curriculum is built around the analysis and understanding of contemporary urban conditions specific to rapidly urbanizing and arid regions of the world. Students are encouraged to pursue a joint degree with the Herberger Institute School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture's Master of Science in the Built Environment.

Applicants who hold a professional design degree (BSLA, MLA, BArch, MArch) will be considered for the two-year MUD program. Applicants who have significant professional experience working with urban design issues, but who do not hold a professional degree in design, may be considered for admission to a three-year MUD program that includes an initial year of design studies. The MUD is a postprofessional, nonaccredited program.
