DESIGN AND CONTEXT

ITALY: ROME–FLORENCE–VENICE–MILAN

May 19–June 5, 2008

The College of Design at Arizona State University offers this three-week program in ITALY to enable the participants to study the relationship between context and design in some of the most exciting European cities: Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan. The program structure, with guided field trips, seminars, and in depth, on-site analysis, will broaden the participants' perception of design as an active and dynamic part of larger cultural issues.

LOCATION

Rome (May 20–May 25)

Our trip begins in Rome, creating the foundation of a study from antiquity to present time. In the eternal city, our group will study how design has contributed to shaping the environment over centuries. The focus of our visit will be the exceptional monuments of the empire, the Vatican, the Baroque treasures, and contemporary work by Renzo Piano and Zaha Hadid.

Florence (May 26–May 28)

Enriched by banking and trade, Florence was also inspired by the ideals of classical antiquity and became the center of the Italian Renaissance, nurturing a spirit of scientific investigation, innovation in architecture, and creativity in the arts. Our group will explore all those fascinating aspects of this city that was declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1982.

Venice (Mestre) and field trips to the Veneto area (May 29–June 1)

The objective of this part of the trip will be to research the culture that resulted from the unique environment of Venice. Here, in-depth analysis of some of the most memorable projects by Carlo Scarpa, including a field trip to Possagno, to explore his acclaimed addition to the Canova Museum and the monumental complex at San’t Vito d’Altivole. In Verona, we will study Scarpa’s masterpiece, the Castelvecchio. We will also visit Villa Rotonda, by Andrea Palladio, outside Vicenza.

Milan (June 2–June 5)

This world–renowned center of design will offer our group the opportunity to visit showrooms where the most innovative design is exhibited. Hosted by a local design expert, we will also visit the grounds of the prestigious Triennale di Milano .
