Job description:

The Design School at Arizona State University seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Industrial Design beginning August 2020.

The successful candidate will see themselves as a dedicated change agent utilizing their knowledge of the design professions and how design thinking along with lessons from design history, can change the world; will challenge traditional design curricula with a vision for the future of design education; and will recognize and communicate a leadership role within the wider context of design management within organizations.

The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in the teaching of the Industrial Design Bachelor of Science in Design, Master of Industrial Design and Master of Science in Design degree programs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level studio courses as well as lecture/seminar courses in these degree programs. Mentoring thesis projects is also included as part of the teaching responsibility. The candidate will also be expected to advise student organizations, specifically IDSA and participate in service to the program, school, institute and university. In addition, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate the potential to develop and sustain research/creative activity capable of achieving national and international recognition.

About the Design School:

The Design School is the largest and most comprehensive design school in the country. It plays prominent roles in design research, pedagogy and public engagement within the Herberger Institute, the University and the greater Phoenix community. Over the next year The Design School is embarking on an exciting ‘redesign’ process – building the next great American design school at the New American University, a school that is relevant, equitable and collaborative. Over the next year, the School will embark on a strategic planning process that will engage the local community, country and world in defining what a design school in the future will look like. This position will join the School on that journey to help lead the field of design education into the future.

Currently, the School has approximately 55 full-time faculty and 1,500 students enrolled in programs in architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and visual communication design. The Design School faculty work on a variety of issues – from addressing the future of the Rio Salado in Metropolitan Phoenix and partnering with Google on increasing human satisfaction to working with communities across the globe to address critical issues of sustainability. In addition, the school’s curricula and research are grounded in its commitment to prepare the next generation of designers to engage in collaborative multi-disciplinary inquiry so that they may work productively within and beyond the boundaries of their respective disciplines.

Our top ranked industrial design program maintains a tradition of academic excellence and has become a leader in transdisciplinary teaching, processes of innovation and design research. Faculty in Industrial Design have established research and design projects with corporations such as Herman Miller, Inc., Intel Corporation, Motorola, Procter & Gamble and General Electric. Program faculty have expertise in many areas of industrial design including human factors and ergonomics, design history, medical product design, design education, digital visualization, rapid prototyping, innovation studies, branding, UI / UX, eco-design, sustainability, and material culture studies.

The Industrial Design Program at ASU focuses on a new model of transdisciplinary product development called Integrated Innovation. The primary goal of Integrated Innovation is to produce transdisciplinary design solutions that:

Meet people’s needs in unexpected ways;
Create value in the marketplace; and
Improve society and the environment.

Students graduating from the program possess the skills and knowledge to be able to use design towards the social, economic and environmental challenges facing the twenty-first century. Graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD), Master of Industrial Design (MID), and Master of Science in Design (MSD) programs have found employment in design consultancies, manufacturing corporations and universities and some have embarked on entrepreneurial careers. Industrial design graduates work at companies such as IDEO, Ammunition, Lunar Design, Wilson Sports, BOSE, Medtronic, Inc., Google, AXON, Apple, LG, Frog Design, Teague, 3M, Kohler and Ping.

The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Required qualifications:

A graduate degree in Industrial Design or a related field;
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, including a minimum of three years’ experience teaching university level industrial design studio and/or theory courses;
Demonstrated potential to develop and sustain a recognized research agenda capable of achieving national recognition;
An identifiable research/creative activity agenda recognized within the discipline of Industrial Design.
Demonstrated knowledge of design methodology dedication to recruiting an internationally diverse and vibrant student population.
Commitment to research with teaching

Desired qualifications:

Preference will be given to individuals with any of the following additional qualifications;

Experience with online, studio, and lecture based course structures and especially courses related to transdisciplinary design principles.
Experience teaching Design History both discipline centric students and to a wider audience of disparate university degree professionals.
Any additional education/certificates in Business, Health Innovation, Engineering and/ or Sustainability.
Professional experience, either in a management role or as a designer within an organization and/or consultancy.
