Samantha Perkins is a design educator and current associate director of academic affairs at The Design School. She has worked across design industries and the academic landscape as an architectural, graphic, interactive, and environmental designer. As a design educator, her primary pedagogical approach has focused on collaborative design methods, uniting the theories and practices of multiple design disciplines into cohesive communicable concepts.
Samantha's creative research has examined the use of context and behavior in the development of wayfinding educational materials, and how these can be applied to varying design deliverables in two- and three-dimensional applications. This research, Knowhere: Finding Ways to Teach Wayfinding, has achieved regional recognition from the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD) as well as national recognition from the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC). It has additionally been presented at conferences for both organizations, and to students at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design.
More recently, this research has expanded into ways of reaching our student audience using the channels and technologies they are most comfortable in, turning the learning environment from one focused on one-way communication into an ongoing discourse using digital and social media technologies. Applications for this include in-person, online, and hybrid academic models, as well as the development of stackable learning assets for use in delivering recurring content in traditional and alternative learning environments.
