Job description:

The Architecture Program in The Design School at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-eligible appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning fall 2022.

The Architecture Program seeks a colleague who will help further the mission of ASU. The candidate should show potential to transform the discourse around building design as related to energy and sustainability. The architecture program seeks colleagues who can contribute to justice, health, and sustainability, and work across our school’s disciplines to support ASU’s design aspirations and mission of inclusion. The successful candidate is expected to teach studio and lecture courses in the undergraduate and graduate architecture programs. The successful candidate will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to develop and sustain a research consistent with a tenure-track position and to engage in service within the school and the profession. Collaboration in research and teaching with other programs in and beyond Architecture, including the School of Sustainability, School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning, and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment is desired.

The Architecture Program has launched a new curriculum that has been designed to be inclusive and impactful. The program offers a professional Master of Architecture (MArch) both online and on ground, a four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) in Architectural Studies, and a Minor in Architectural Studies. In addition, the School supports two graduate research degree programs conferring respectively a Master of Science in Architecture (MSArch) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Design, Environment, and the Arts (PhD). We offer concurrent Master’s degree options with each of the other programs in The Design School. In addition, graduate students can pursue concurrent master’s degree options across ASU. Required qualifications:

• An accredited degree in architecture or international equivalent;
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching architecture studios; and
• Ability to teach courses related to energy, environmental systems, and/or sustainability;
• Potential to develop and sustain a research agenda capable of achieving national or international recognition;
• Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and research, teaching and/or service.

Desired qualifications:

• Ability to contribute to the charter and mission of ASU;
• Commitment to exploring the current and future role of architecture and architectural technology in environmentally and socially responsible design practices;
• Professional registration in a related field;
• A PhD in a related field;
• Ability to develop funding and/or grant support for research and creative work;
• Experience developing and teaching interdisciplinary design curriculum; and
• Interest in online teaching and learning.
