Description:

The Design School at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time benefits eligible tenure track  position as Assistant Professor in the Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Environmental Design (LAUDED) program. This appointment begins in August 2024 and will be located on the Tempe, Arizona campus.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and design studios in areas such as community design, ecosystems and sustainable design, landscape architecture theory and criticism, landscape architecture research methods, environmental and climate justice, foundational design studios, and landscape performance. They will develop and sustain a record of research/creative activities that includes external funding and peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidates will also provide service to the program, school, university, profession and the broader community. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations.

About The Design School

The Design School, the largest and most comprehensive design school in the country, is committed to creating inclusive spaces that welcome and decolonize design education. The Design School plays a prominent role in design research, pedagogy and public engagement within the Herberger Institute, the University and the greater Phoenix community. Currently, the school has approximately 75 full-time faculty and over 3000 students enrolled in programs in architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and visual communication design. About the LAUDED Program

The Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Environmental Design (LAUDED) program features a strong faculty from varied backgrounds in The Design School and the professional community. The Program offers an accredited four-year Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) and an accredited Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA). Additionally, the Program offers a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design (BSED) and a Master of Urban Design (MUD). The LAUDED program emphasizes sustainability and other challenges of the 21st century through the design of healthy, equitable, safe, and resilient environments. Our purpose is to facilitate positive change and prepare students for professional practice, advanced study, and leadership in the LAUDED disciplines. The successful candidate will contribute to this mission.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A professional degree and a doctorate or a PhD degree in landscape architecture or a related field
  2. Evidence of teaching excellence at the college or university level
  3. Demonstrated potential to develop and sustain research/creative activities relevant to the LAUDED disciplines and capable of achieving national or international recognition

Desired Qualifications:

  • Licensure in landscape architecture, or equivalent for international applicants where licensure is not required for practice
  • Experience teaching history, theory, and/or research courses in disciplines related to the LAUDED programs.
  • A record of publication in journals or conferences in an area of interest related to LAUDED program;
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct in multiple modalities, including online, in-person and hybrid, to both undergraduate and graduate learners;
  • Demonstrated expertise in current or emergent design practices such as design justice, design for sustainability, design for health, community-engaged design, and/or design management; and
  • Experience teaching technology applications in design, such as GIS, AutoCAD, or Lumion

The application deadline is January 17, 2024. Applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for a reserve pool.  Applications in the reserve pool may then be reviewed in the order in which they were received until the position is filled.
