The Design School


The Design School at Arizona State University invites applications for full-time, benefits eligible tenure/tenure-track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in The Design School. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Urban Design, Indigenous Placekeeping & Design, Architecture and/or Landscape Architecture. The rank for this position will be determined at the time of hire, depending on experience and expertise. This position will be located on the Tempe, Arizona Campus and begins Fall 2024.

About the Position

We seek applicants with a research or creative activity focus on Indigenous Placekeeping for urban and community design. We define urban design broadly as the spatial configuration of buildings, streets, and other public and private space in relation to the place-based social lives and meanings of residents. Applicants may examine a variety of urban designs at the neighborhood or small settlement scale (a few buildings in relation to each other) up to larger city scales (compact urban neighborhoods and cities). We welcome applicants who intend to focus their research or creative activity on building bridges between tribal communities and larger cities including aspects of urban and non-urban tribal members.


The successful candidate is expected to teach studio and lecture courses in the Urban Design, Architecture, the new Master of Science in Indigenous Placekeeping + Design program, the Indigenous Placekeeping + Design certificate programs, and/or Landscape Architecture, depending on area of expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will lead seminars based on their research interests, mentor graduate thesis projects and contribute to other programs in The Design School. The candidate is expected to develop and sustain research/creative activity capable of achieving national and international recognition and attracting external funding. Successful candidates will also participate in service to the program, The Design School, the Herberger Institute and the University, and to student organizations. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations.

Required qualifications

The successful candidate is required to possess:


  • A terminal degree (e.g., MArch, MFA, MDes, PhD) in an urban design-related discipline (e.g., Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Design, Community Planning and Project Development, Land Use Management, Urban Sociology, Construction Management, Building Science, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, Real Estate Development) by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching in one or more of the design disciplines.
  • The potential to develop and sustain a research/creative activity agenda capable of achieving national or international recognition and contributing to the body of knowledge at the intersection of indigeneity in the built environment.

Desired Qualifications

Preference will be given to individuals with;

  • Ability to instruct in multiple modalities, including online, in-person and hybrid, to both an undergraduate and graduate learners.
  • Licensure in landscape architecture or architecture, or the equivalent for international applicants where licensure is not required for practice.
  • Experience teaching design studios and courses related to the applicant’s area of research and/or creative activities and an interest in interdisciplinary practices.
  • Ability to develop and sustain community partnerships.
  • Ability to secure external funding for research and creative work.
