Milestones

Milestone guidelines and application

Undergraduate students from select majors within The Design School must successfully pass a degree milestone at the end of their freshman year to continue in the professional degree program. Applying to pass the degree milestone requirement is competitive and limited by available resources.

Students who want to submit a milestone application in more than one major (for example: interior design and industrial design) must submit separate applications for each major. Transfer students must be admitted to ASU prior to the application deadline to be eligible to apply online to pass the degree milestone. Transfers into programs are considered only on a space available basis and such transfers are limited to students with equivalent course work who are competitive with continuing students. Students who do not pass the degree milestone will meet with their academic advisor to discuss their many degree options at ASU.

The milestone process is subject to change each year. We maintain the past year's information on this website to provide students with information about the types of materials they will be expected to submit. It is each individual student's responsibility to select and follow the correct set of application requirements listed below. To start an online application, click on the ‘Apply now!’ button below. Be sure to download the guidelines by clicking on your intended major.

Degree progression and completion

Effective Spring 2020, the Milestone requirement for Architecture majors has been removed so this will no longer be required of current or future students moving forward. All Architecture students are expected to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Students who are not able to consistently maintain a 3.0 GPA could be required to change their major. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss their ability to be successful in completing this degree.

Degree progression and completion

For academic years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, the milestone application for GD/VCD majors will not be required for current students. All GD/VCD students are expected to have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a C or above in their fist two semesters or first five classes (including GRA 121 and GRA 122) to be eligible to continue in the degree. Students who are not able to consistently maintain a 3.0 GPA could be required to change their major. Students should consult with their advisor to discuss their ability to be successful in completing this degree. In the future, depending on space capacity the milestone application may be required or the GPA average may be adjusted.

Important information for transfer students

Transfer students who intend to apply directly to pass the milestones for a professional program must be admitted to Arizona State University and have received their certificate of admission to the university prior to the application deadline date for their major; the certificate of admission to the university is required as part of the application materials for transfer students who are not currently enrolled at ASU. All first year course requirements must be satisfied as well in order for a student to be eligible for admission to the professional program.
