The Design School – Community Briefing

We are all in this together. Although the way we are learning and working may have shifted, the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is here to support you and remain open remotely.

We’re remote, but not far away.

The Design School is available to support you during this time. Be well and be safe.

Hello Design School Students!

Thank you all for making the best of a difficult situation this past week - we’re so proud of all of you! Please continue to work with your faculty, letting them know how you’re doing, as well as what you need to make this unexpected transition work.

I am emailing now to give you an update on how to get software that you may need on your personal computers:

  1. For those using Macs and needing access to a Windows environment, please check https://myapps.asu.edu/app/windows-10-home-usage for a reduced cost copy of Windows 10 ($10!). You’ll need to use Bootcamp to install this. For information on how to do that, please check here.
  2. Adobe Creative Cloud is available to all Herberger students now. HIDA IT sent out previous instructions on how to activate those accounts. PDF icon View a PDF of those instructions.
  3. Autodesk products are available at https://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/autocad. These should be free downloads. Please follow all instructions on the site for access.
  4. Rhino is providing 90-day trials at https://www.rhino3d.com/download. Make sure you select the “evaluation” installation link. The software is a fully-functioning copy and will work for 90 days. If you have already used up a 90-day trial copy, it’s suggested that you apply for a new one using a different email address. If this does not work, please let us know as soon as possible so we can determine alternate routes.
  5. Check with your instructors for copies of Keyshot and SolidWorks. Instructors are submitting requests to HIDA IT and should have licenses soon.
  6. Same with SketchUp Pro—ask your instructor for a copy so they can get that information to HIDA IT asap.

Over the last weeks, the amazing crew at HIDA IT have been working hard to not only move everyone into the online environment, but also to find resources to help you continue your vital work in all courses. Thank you for your patience as they arranged to have our computer labs cleaned—those are currently open 9–1 and 5–9 Monday through Friday, and 10–4 on the weekends. This might change and we will let you know ASAP.

If we’ve missed anything, please let us know so we can see about getting access to software for you as soon as possible. We will deliver on our promise of an innovative education!

We’re remote, but not far.

Be Well and Be Safe.

All my best,

Jason

UPDATE Lab access
We have been working through steps to ensure that students who want to have lab access to specialized labs can in this modified learning and work environment. Faculty have been instructed to modify student work and assignments so that lab access is not required. We are working to ensure we have adequate cleaning supplies to keep proper sanitization available in labs. Today, we are opening the following lab:

  • Computer lab in Design North Room 255/263
    Hours:
    Mon-Fri: 9 a.m.–1 p.m., 5 p.m.–9 p.m.
    Sat–Sun: 10 a.m.–4 p.m

Labs will be staffed by student workers. Student workers will NOT clean equipment. We will follow social distancing (limited occupancy) at labs, and supplies (gloves, wipes) will be provided so that students can clean equipment before and after use. We will also abide by proper social distancing in the labs. We will maintain this structure and lab hours only as long as adequate staffing and cleaning supplies are available. We will close labs if staff and supplies are unavailable. This is a shifting situation. Please bear with us as we try to support our students while maintaining practices that are sensible and safe.

We are also working hard to secure home licenses for specialized software, but that is case-by-case. Again, you will not be required to complete an assignment using software that you do not have access to remotely.
